What to Expect in Our Kids Music Classes on the  Mornington Peninsula

(For a start, it’s NOT about stiff poses and forced clapping to backing tracks.)

Our children’s music making sessions are child-led, inclusive, autonomous, and a space for kids to be COMPLETELY THEMSELF!

Booked your first session?
Here’s how it works:

We’re so glad to have you join us! Here’s everything you need to know about our kids music sessions on the Mornington Peninsula.

Getting There

Our face-to-face classes are held at:

Making Waves Paediatric Occupational Therapy
4/4 Torca Terrace, Mornington

Sounds Like This fun and vibrant studio is situated within the Making Waves building, in the Mornington industrial estate off Mornington-Tyabb Road (not far from Coles and in the next street over from Commonfolk Coffee if you want a cheeky caffeinated pick-me-up before or after class).

Toilets: are available on site and the space is wheelchair accessible. There is a change table for babes. Please take soiled nappies away with you.

Parking: There is free on-street parking within Torca Terrace and close by and in the streets around us but it can be busy! If you’re coming on a weekday, please allow at least five minutes to find a carpark and wander over. Please do not park within our neighbouring factories allocated parking (this makes them cranky).

Public transport: We’re a just short walk from the bus stop for the 788 Frankston – Portsea bus.

*We also run limited city sessions at the State Library of Victoria and occasional pop-up sessions in community spaces within Southeast Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula. Contact us to receive more information about these sessions.

What to Bring

Come as you are! We supply all the props we’ll use throughout the music making session.

At the beginning of each kids music class, we take off our shoes (so we don’t stand on precious fingers) and sit on the floor. Please wear comfy clothes so you feel comfortable to play — activewear is encouraged!

If it's chilly, you can guarantee I'll have the heater on and in summer we’re chillin’ with the air-con.

If your child has a favourite toy they can’t leave home without, the toy is welcome too — whatever your child needs to feel comfortable and safe.

What to Expect

Each session runs for approximately 35 minutes, during which time there will be plenty of sitting, playing, snuggling, giggling, and exploring different instruments and props (depending on the class).

These classes are as much about you — the parent or guardian — as it is about the child. Prepare to be a little silly, let your guard down, have lots of laughs, and learn something new. We’re all about learning, so growth mindset is a must!

Each session is different, but we’ll always cover the ‘must-dos’. Here are a couple of social stories of our sessions:

Social Stories are available for all classes. Please let us know if this or any other accessibility tool would be helpful for your child. We are here to support you both!

Prepare to Be Present

Our sessions are intentionally designed to be a space where both parent and child grow together, creating lasting memories and deepening their connection through the shared language of music. While you’re with us, we strongly encourage you to leave your baggage at the door, put away your phone, and surrender to the moment. There’s no better gift you could give your child than to be 100% present with them for half an hour(ish) of music making.

Sounds Like This classes aren’t just for the kids…

Instead of simply handing your child the "fish" of musical enjoyment, our programs encourage parents to learn alongside them, truly embodying the spirit of "teach a man to fish." Just as children discover the joy of rhythm and melody, parents gain invaluable skills and insights, fostering a shared musical journey. This reciprocal learning strengthens your parent-child bond, capitalising on the proven benefits of collaborative music-making.

35 minutes of the children music-making with us
= SO MUCH FUN

35 minutes of deep learning for everyone involved
= BRAIN CHANGING MAGIC that lasts a lifetime

Through active listening and child-led play Sounds Like This immersive sessions are packed with opportunities to capitalise on the phenomenal benefits of music education.

Please take this baton and run with it!

Before we get started on how to prep for our kids music classes, let’s be totally clear:

There is nothing your child needs to do to ‘fit in’.

You and your children are welcome exactly as you are. Sounds Like This is a neuro-affirming space, and all are welcome and encouraged to be their truest selves.

If your child likes to wiggle and fidget, we don’t just tolerate the wiggling and fidgeting. We ENCOURAGE it. (We even wrote a post to help you understand why some kids love to move.)

Go ahead and let your child roll on the floor or hide in a corner. It doesn’t mean they’re not learning. It could very well be the best way they absorb information. Once we see your child move, get to know them, and understand their needs, we will adapt.

Our team of highly experienced educators are masters at tuning-in to behaviours! We are here to create a safe, fun, and inclusive space that meets your child where they are. In our sessions you will gain useful insights, strategies, and tools to continue to support your young love throughout their lives.

No pressure. No arbitrary external timelines. Just love, connection and music.

FAQs

How do I sign up again?

Love your enthusiasm! If you’re currently enrolled in our program, you’ll receive early access to our bookings for the next term before we announce them publically.

Just head to our Bookings page and select the class you’d like to enrol in. If you’ve joined us before, you’ll already have an account with us, which makes booking your next spot as easy as five-fingered counting.

Can I bring a friend along?

We love it when you spread the word about our music making sessions and welcome new families whenever we can!

To keep our classes small, safe, and manageable, we have limited class numbers — not to mention limitations on the number of people the space can accommodate, but if there’s availability we’d love to see you all!

Invite your friend to book a casual spot or get in touch with us and we can help them find the perfect class for their family.

We’re hooked. How can we continue making music together at home?

Yay, there’s nothing we love to hear more than this! Everything we do in our kids' music classes can be taken and repeated at home — your child might even initiate it!

You can also sign up to our Family Music Club to access hundreds of short, interactive, music-making videos online. These are a natural continuation of our in-person music making that your child can enjoy wherever you have signal!

My other child has a curriculum day — can they come with their younger sibling?

Absolutely! We love it when families make music together and that you know this is a welcome space.

You may book your additional sibling with a Casual Class Pass or you may choose to use one of your existing membership passes.

Please visit Sounds Like This’ Booking site to book in. You can set this up in advance or on the day if it’s a last-minute thing. If you have any questions please sing out!

How do bookings work? What if we’re away?
