Music Improves Memory Retention We’ve known for a while now that using rhymes, rhythms, and music facilitates learning and helps children retain information longer. Dr Patricia Wolfe, author of Brain Matters: Translating Research into Classroom Practice, says that parents and teachers should use music (especially rhythm and rhyme) to enhance memory. That’s because information embedded in music is much easier to recall than if it were embedded in prose. Here is Dr Wolfe with more detail: “Although many scientists believe that language and music are closely linked and share some of the same neural circuits, music (or rhyme set to music) clearly has the advantage when it comes to recall. We can use this natural proclivity of the brain in designing educational activities that will enhance the retention of certain kinds of information… Including information like reading. Most 5-year-old children can handle two bits of info at a time. Music Play Helps Young Brains Process Sound You can’t learn to read if you can’t distinguish between sounds. Simple as that. Plenty of studies show that musicians can process key sound ingredients much more effectively than non-musos. Think about what we do in our kids music classes. We prompt the poppets to respond to what they hear, whether it’s through echo songs or in a drum circle. This encourages them to listen carefully to the notes, rhythms, and phrases we’re making. Music making (and training) helps sharpen the brain’s attention to sound. It actually changes the brain! A two-year study of young music students found that music training strengthened the areas of the brain that relate to sound, speech, rhythm, and language. That’s the first step in the process of reading. Rhythm Recognition and Phonological Awareness Are Deeply Connected Music helps with something called phonological awareness— a fancy term that describes how we can all hear each little sound within words and translate them into speech. Tonnes of researchers have found this amazing connection in our brains, where our ability to recognise rhythm is linked to our ability to recognise phonemes. Simply put: Those who struggle with rhythm inevitably struggle with reading. Take a look at this study of 4 and 5 year olds. The researchers found a close connection between pitch and rhythmic skills on the one hand and phonological awareness and early reading skills on the other. Then there’s this incredible 2003 trial by Kate Overy. She took a group of children with reading disabilities and put them through 8 weeks of musical instruction. During this time, the kids improved their phonological awareness and spelling skills much faster than without the training. Other researchers have found that preschoolers who struggle to synchronise a beat will also struggle when learning to read. Music Enhances Syllable Learning Thanks to The Sound of Music, a childhood is almost incomplete these days without a singalong to Do Re Mi. Most kids just think it’s a fun song to sing but there’s something else going on. It’s enhancing the connection between letters and sounds and helping children recognise the different parts of words, like syllables and phonemes. Do Re Mi is a simplified example but many songs use note values or beats to represent different syllables. Music Can Reinforce a Child’s Vocabulary The playful free thinkers in my kids music classes love to make up funny sounds and noises and they LOVE songs that already contain funny words and phrases. The less sense the songs make, the better. The kids love them and can sing them on repeat for hours #sorrynotsorry. When you’re an adult, getting an earworm in your head sucks. But when you’re a kid, it primes your brain for all the good things. That repetition is what we’re looking for here. It helps children get their mouths around sounds, syllables, and words and start building their own vocabulary. Think of it like the way children learn language. Music is the same. For example, recite “Slowly, slowly, very slowly like a garden snail” as you would when playing with a child, then try to say, “Hello… would you like some water?” at the same pace. It does NOT work! Music and speech are both put together using a finite set of sounds (for music, it’s notes whereas in speech, it’s phonemes). Hand-eye coordination – The rapid catching, stomping and eye tracking needed for successful bubble-snatching requires toddlers to use their depth perception AND hand-eye coordination. Repeating an action again and again and getting the same outcome helps toddlers understand the impact of cause and effect. You may notice your toddler anticipating the pop of the bubble once they get the idea of what a strategically-poked finger can do. Proprioceptive stimulation, development, and awareness – The proprioceptive system is located in our muscles and joints and provides us with a sense of body awareness. It can help children regulate their responses to sensory stimuli so it’s an important element to cover. You may not realise it, but taking a breath, focusing on the bubble wand, and directly blowing can foster so many skills in preschoolers and older kids. Did you know that slowing down the breath has an impact on your emotional state? Studies are starting to reveal that taking slow breaths (specifically, around 6 exhalations a minute) may help: Increase our feel-good hormone, dopamine Decrease our stress hormone, cortisol Alleviate the symptoms of depression and anxiety Relieve insomnia Lower the heart rate and blood pressure Ultimately, it triggers a relaxation response in our brain and body. No wonder it’s so important during meditation and yoga! Recognising your child’s control over the way they breathe is a great way to introduce the concept. Talking of control, directing and intentionally focusing their breath teaches youngsters about self regulation, especially when it comes to their emotions. What a wonderful world it would be with fewer toddler (and teenage) tantrums! Controlling the breath is another fabulous skill when it comes to—you guessed it—music making! They’ll also be working on their: Vocal health – Music makers who breathe properly don’t strain those precious developing vocal chords. Breath consistency and control Turn taking skills And as they explore their breath, they’ll be asking themselves (but not in so many words!): How can I move my lips to angle this air? How can I blow faster or slower to make it work? How can I make my breath steady and aimed just right, to make those REALLY BIG bubbles? Enjoying bubble play together is a very simple activity with some seriously worthwhile payoffs, all while creating a lot of laughter amongst the skill-building. Simple echo games build self-esteem as the children learn that their contribution is worth being heard and valued. Vocalisation games can start even with the littlest babies and involve replicating the little squeezes and babbling noises they make. Babies quickly recognise the back-and-forth nature of conversation and communication and their role within it. As babies reach a few months of age, you can start to build on the sounds they make by exaggerating the noise, changing the tone, or changing the direction of the sound, for example. Instead of just talking at them, they can see that you’re waiting and responding to the noises they make, which helps them understand that their contribution is valued—such an important component of the Being aspect of the Early Years Framework.
